An Augusta man who became unresponsive after being tasered by a Richmond County deputy has died.
Nelson Lee Graham Jr., 33, of George Road, has been at Augusta University Medical Center since last Friday (Dec. 16), after becoming unresponsive during an interaction with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. He was pronounced dead at 11:03 a.m. Thursday, Coroner Mark Bowen said. An autopsy has been scheduled.
The GBI is investigating the tasing incident. On Friday, deputies responded to the 1900 block of George Road in reference to a subject causing a disturbance.
“It was reported that a subject was threatening to harm his family and was being aggressive and had an outstanding Petition for Mental Evaluation,” sheriff’s Sgt. William McCarty said. “Deputies made contact with the subject, and the subject refused to comply with orders given by deputies.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to conduct an investigation, due to the nature of the incident. The GBI responded and assumed the investigation.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be given to the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review, the GBI said in a press release.
