A 24-year-old Augusta man died early Saturday after being shot on the 1300 block of 10th Street, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Walter McNeil Jr. said deputies responded to the location at 10:55 p.m. on Nov. 21 for reports of gunfire and a person hit. “Upon arrival, Deputies located the incident scene and secured the area,” McNeil stated.

The victim was identified as Heavaughn Leigene Brooks, 24, of the 2500 block of Porter Street in Augusta. McNeil said Brooks “had sustained at least one gunshot wound and had already been transported to a local hospital by private vehicle before the Deputies’ arrival.”

Despite emergency treatment, Brooks was pronounced dead at 1:59 a.m. on Nov. 22. Sgt. McNeil said the case “has been upgraded to a homicide and is ongoing.” No further information has been released.
