An Augusta man is behind bars Monday after allegedly taking a box truck on a joy ride.

James Fullwood of Bransford Road reportedly took the box truck in Richmond County and drove into Aiken County.

Richmond County law enforcement contacted Aiken authorities to alert them of the theft. Around 8:47 a.m. Monday, Aiken County Sheriff’s deputies located Fullwood driving the vehicle on East Pine Log Road, according to a police report.

He then “attempted to evade police by refusing to stop for blue lights/sirens,” according to the report, and a pursuit ensued.

Twelve deputies are listed on the report as “responding officers.”

One officer was able to get behind Fullwood as he drove on Old Wagener Road. He made a right on East Pine Log. Deputies continued to pursue him to Banks Mill Road, where he turned into the parking lot of a Circle K.

Fullwood “abandoned the vehicle in reverse and fled on foot for approximately a quarter of a mile,” the report said.

Deputies apprehended Fullwood without further incident.

The victim was called and reported that nothing appeared to have been taken from the truck; however, Fullwood “failed to place the vehicle in park,” and it backed into one of the responding officers’ patrol cars causing damage to the front passenger bumper bar.

Fullwood was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center.
