Date: December 05, 2021

The Coroner’s Office is investigating a pedestrian fatality that occurred Saturday night on the 3700 block of Peach Orchard Road, Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Gregory Lynn Baker, 52, of the 3700 block of Byrd Road, was crossing Peach Orchard Road in his wheelchair when he was struck by a southbound vehicle.  Baker was thrown into the northbound lanes where he was struck by a Richmond County Sheriff’s patrol car.

Baker was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Multiple residents have reported seeing Baker in the middle of the road on previous occasions, including a few weeks ago when he almost got hit by an 18 wheeler that had to run another car off the road to avoid hitting him.

Family members say he has three children. “He had a stroke and had very little physical mobility and little to no speech,” Tina Clements Miller said on Facebook.

Kelvin Livingston said that Baker had just returned from Midville after burying his brother on Saturday. “He hadn’t been home 2 or 3 hours when he got hit,” Livingston said. “He had a few strokes and he was never the same.”

An autopsy is scheduled at the GBI Lab, the coroner said.
