An Augusta man accused of hitting an ambulance and killing a patient while fleeing from a sheriff’s officer has been indicted.

The Richmond County grand jury returned an 13-count indictment Tuesday, June 21, against Khalil A. Williams, 26, accusing him of vehicular homicide and vehicular injuries.

According to the indictment, Williams was fleeing from a Richmond County Sheriff’s deputy in a marked patrol car March 31 when he hit an ambulance at Olive and Milledgeville roads. Robert Daniels, 81, died of injuries suffered in the crash. Two others in the ambulance transporting Daniels were also injured.

Williams, who is accused of possession of methamphetamine and a weapon that day, is also accused of driving under the influence and reckless driving for allegedly driving at a high rate of speed, running traffic lights, driving on the wrong side of a road and driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Williams has been held in jail without bond since the March 31 crash. He also has probation violation warrants pending against him, and other criminal charges are pending.

Williams was first prosecuted as an adult in 2015 when he was sentenced to probation under the First Offender Act for burglary. In 2017, he was convicted of possession of marijuana and illegal possession of a firearm, and in 2019, he was sentenced to one year imprisonment followed by six years’ probation for burglary.

Williams was released from prison April 20, 2020, and on Sept. 7, 2020, he was charged with battery and trespassing. Those charges are still pending.

On Nov. 15, 2021, Williams was accused of pointing a firearm at three people, reckless conduct and illegal possession of a firearm. Court records do not indicate if he was arrested in November on those charges, but he is named in another indictment that accuses him of illegal possession of a firearm again on Dec. 25, 2021.
