Date: September 07, 2023

An Augusta man who was being sought by Columbia County authorities for motor vehicle theft was fatally shot Thursday afternoon by a Jefferson County deputy trying to arrest him.

Xion Xang Dunn, 35, was tracked to a home on South Fleming Street in Wrens, where the fatal shooting occurred, according to a GBI press release.

“The preliminary information indicates that members of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Wrens Police Department were at a home on South Fleming Street in Wrens attempting to arrest Xion Xang Dunn, 35, of Augusta, on outstanding felony warrants out of Florida and Columbia County, Georgia,” the release says. “While at the home, law enforcement officers found Dunn inside the home and while attempting to arrest him saw that he was holding a firearm.  There was a struggle between Dunn and two Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies. One of the deputies fired his service weapon and hit Dunn.”

Officers began to provide first aid to Dunn until EMS personnel arrived. Dunn was taken to the Augusta University Medical Center for treatment and subsequently died from his injuries.

Earlier this week, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office posted Dunn’s picture on a wanted flyer, saying he was wanted for motor vehicle theft.

Dunn’s body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Middle Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review. This is the 67th officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2023
