An Augusta man was found dead Tuesday morning following a fire at a home on Flowing Wells Road, authorities said.

Mark Dorn, 62, was killed in the fire at 1425 Flowing Wells Road, deep in a wooded area not far from a fire station.

Coroner Mark Bowen said firefighters found him on the floor while extinguishing the fire around 9:10 a.m. Tuesday. The coroner’s office has notified a daughter who lives in Hephzibah, and an autopsy has been scheduled.

There were no immediate signs of foul play, the coroner said.

Dorn previously lived in Martinez a few years ago.

Angie Burkett sent us this memory of Mark: “Years ago me and my kids and then husband had lunch with Mark every Sunday. Even after my divorce, he would come to check on me and my kids. He was such a sweet man. He and my husband were related. He was my ex mother in law’s grandson. The whole family got together at her house every Sunday for dinner. What great memories. Rest in peace sweet Thang. That was my nickname for him. Sweet and funny. Love you Mark.”

Shelly Cave Coleman sent this message about the victim: “Mark and I were friends for the last 37 years, since I was sixteen years old. Mark was so funny, smart, a great friend, but most of all he was the best father. Not only to his own child, his daughter, Ginny, but also to his stepsons when they were growing up. They never wanted for anything.and always had what they needed because of him. He was ALWAYS, ALWAYS there. Most of the time doing the job of both the Father and Mother. Which he didn’t mind a bit.

She continued, “His daughter meant the world to him and so did his grand babies. He talked about them all the time and how he wished he could see them more. He worked his ass off for 40+ years as one of the best auto mechanics in the Augusta area up until about 6-7 years ago. Even though he retired from doing it every day. He would still do it on the side or for anyone that really needed his expertise. But unfortunately like the rest of us his body was getting old and achy. And other illnesses kept him from doing the job that he was so good at and that he loved. Mark was like a big brother to me and my friends when we were teenagers. He always looked out for his friends. He didn’t always get the same in return but he didn’t care. As long as he could help his friends or anyone, he was happy. I am going to miss him dearly. His humor, his laugh, his kindness and his compassion for people. That is so rare these days. So rare. Give Pops a big hug for me. Love you man. Your little sis, Shelly.”
