Augusta man killed in Lumpkin Road shooting

An Augusta man was fatally shot Saturday on Lumpkin Road, authorities said.

Walter Smith, 28, was shot on the 2100 block of Lumpkin Road and was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:59 p.m. Saturday, Coroner Mark Bowen said. Smith lived on Lumpkin Road. Smith goes by “Walter Smith Jr.” on Facebook.

Richmond County authorities have not announced any arrests or motive in the case. They said they were called to Lumpkin Road about 5 p.m. Saturday to a “suspicious situation.”

“Upon arrival, deputies located a male victim who had been shot at least one time and succumbed to his injuries,” sheriff’s Sgt. John Perry said. “The investigation is in its early stages, and there is no further information available.”
