Augusta man shot by Burke cops was out on bond for 2021 murder

Ray Streetman Jr.

Date: October 16, 2024

An Augusta man who was shot on Sunday by a Burke County deputy while attempting to strike officers with his vehicle is the same individual awaiting trial for a 2021 murder in Richmond County.

Ray Terrell Streetman Jr., 27, is recovering at MCG Wellstar Hospital after being shot.

He had been released on bond over a year ago due to delays in his murder trial stemming from a 2021 shooting outside the Red Crab that killed 31-year-old Ashaad Truitt and injured a 28-year-old woman. He was also arrested again last month for a DUI and speeding in Richmond County and was released almost immediately after paying a cash bond.

On Sunday night, Burke County deputies responded to reports of a large party on Martin Luther King Blvd in Keysville. Upon arrival, they encountered a significant crowd and began efforts to disperse the attendees.

“During this operation, deputies observed a male driving recklessly, reportedly laying drag,” said Colonel Jimmy Wylds of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. “As deputies approached to address the situation, the individual accelerated and drove directly toward one of the deputies directing traffic. In response to the imminent threat, a deputy discharged their weapon at the vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene.”

Fortunately, no deputies or civilians were injured during the incident. After evading law enforcement, Streetman was dropped off by an unknown individual at an Emergency Medical Assistance (EMA) station around 10:08 p.m., suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his left side. He was subsequently transported to WellStar Hospital in Augusta, where he is listed in stable condition.

Streetman faces two charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, as well as charges of fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement.

Sheriff Alfonso Williams requested that the Columbia County Use of Force Team lead the investigation into this shooting incident.

Streetman is the same man arrested for murder in a 2021 shooting outside the Red Crab on Peach Orchard Road, which resulted in the death of Ashaad “Shaad” Truitt and left a 28-year-old Augusta woman with a leg injury.

Ashaad Truitt, victim

According to online records, he was released on bond in February 2023, and his murder trial remains unresolved with several delays.
