Augusta man to serve prison term for attacking mother

An Augusta man convicted of aggravated assault for an attack on his mother has been sentenced to 12 years in prison followed by eight years’ probation.

Charles Shirley, 43, was arrested on July 24, 2020, the day he beat his 62-year-old mother, causing a brain injury, according to court and jail records. Tuesday, a Richmond County Superior Court jury convicted Shirley and Judge Ashley Wright imposed the sentence.

According to a news release from District Attorney Jared Williams, Shirley’s mother had to undergo an induced coma to survive the attack. She has since died of an unrelated cause.

Shirley has a history of theft and family violence battery in Columbia County.
