The mother and grandmother of a 1-year-old child were arrested Tuesday after the toddler was hospitalized from an apparent meth overdose.
The child’s condition has stabilized at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, but an investigation has led to the two arrests.
Deborah Danielle Wright, 29, and Laura Michelle Wright, 51, were both charged with cruelty to children in the second degree. They were booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.

The investigation began Monday when the child was admitted to the hospital in Augusta. According to Sgt. Caleb Lee of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, the agency’s Criminal Investigation Division swiftly initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the child’s exposure and ultimately led to the arrests.
A meth possession charge against Deborah Wright has lingered in the court for two years, following her arrest in March 2022. She also has a pending trespass charge.
