An Augusta man awaiting trial for murder was stabbed in the neck Friday as part of continuing violence at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center.
Chauncey Thompson, 20, was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed in the face and neck. Authorities say another 20-year-old inmate, Robert Tramel Foreman Jr., will be charged with aggravated assault in Thompson’s stabbing.
Thompson was being held in the jail for the Oct. 15, 2022 murder of Tymarkus Starkes on Old Savannah Road.
Foreman is awaiting trial for a 2020 armed robbery and aggravated assault as well as other charges that occurred while he was out on bond. Foreman was 17 when he joined an older suspect in jumping a 40-year-old man who thought he was meeting a woman for a date.
The robbery victim told authorities that he met a woman while she worked at Dollar General and arranged a date with her. When he showed up to her home, five to six men jumped and robbed him.
Friday’s jail stabbing comes less than a month after Klaimon Bradford, 31, was stabbed in G-pod by two inmates. Bradford suffered six stab wounds, including injuries to his face, back, shoulder and hand. Authorities have filed charges against Tor’jae Marvin Tanksley and Trayon Adams Sr. in the stabbing.
In April, seven inmates were wounded with shanks in a bloody fight, leading to new charges against nine men, authorities said.
In a radio interview last month, RCSO Chief Deputy Pat Clayton said inmates are getting shanks from the decaying jail.
“The jail is just coming apart. They will take parts of the jail, and they will just make shanks. Those are not being brought in,” Chief Clayton said. “Some of the stuff, they get out of their cell.”
The agency’s Crime Suppression Team is in the jail at least once or twice a week doing searches and shakedowns, he said. Informants are also giving officers intelligence on cell phones.
