Augusta’s planning department is warning public against post-hurricane scammers.

On Thursday the Augusta Planning and Development office issued a guide offering tips to residents on how to avoid contractor scams as they go about the process of recovery from the storm.

The department urges citizens to be cautious that any home repairs they commission be done safely and according to code.

Make sure that a contractor’s business license is current, the department advises, with an expiration date of Dec. 31, 2024. Ensure that their license—by the Georgia Secretary of State— is in the specific services they are offering, and only hire licensed and bonded electricians. Out of state contractors should be registered with their secretary of state, as some municipalities don’t have business license requirements.

The planning department encourages residents to contact its offices at 706-821-1796 for information on how to select contractors, as well as to report contractor fraud.
