Augusta Planning Commission’s post-Masters agenda includes a proposed wine club

Date: April 02, 2023

Proposed shops for tires, oil changes and wine are among the items the Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission is scheduled to contend with once it convenes for its monthly meeting after Masters Week.

Jason Jones, a former sommelier at Augusta National Golf Club, is proposing to launch the Augusta Wine Company, a retail facility to sell and store wines, as well as host tasting and offer wine education, at 1918 Central Ave., currently zoned B-1 Neighborhood Business.

The parcel holds a 1,448-square foot building, the former location of an Auben Homes office, on the southeast corner of Central and Morris Street.

Jones is seeking to rezone the property B-2 General Business in order to operate the wine shop, which would include wine tastings and offer memberships for customers building their wine collections.

“This business model is not one that is currently provided in the CSRA,” said Jones in his letter of intent, noting that his wine club would not be open for “casual or social alcohol consumption,” and that the tastings would be by appointment only.

A proposed Valvoline oil change and auto inspection shop is the subject of a rezoning request at 3632 Wheeler Road, also from Neighborhood to General Business, submitted by Charles Dunstan of 3D Development.

The parcel is at the southwest corner of  George C. Wilson Drive and Wheeler Road, in a cluster of professional offices near Doctors Hospital. An office building once stood on the property, but has since been demolished.

Ahmed Sultan is seeking to rezone a small parcel at 3225 Wrightsboro Road, the former site of One-Hour Cleanerizers, from B-1 Neighborhood Business to B-2 General Business. Sultan is seeking refurbish and lease the storefront property for use as either a tire shop or a convenience store.

Another item, a request by Jeb Boggus to rezone 43 acres along Mike Padgett Highway from Agricultural and Light Industrial to R-MH Manufactured Home Residential, in order to build a mobile home park, had been postponed from the planning commission’s previous meeting.

The Augusta-Richmond County Planning Commission is scheduled to meet on Monday, April 10 at 3 p.m. in the Municipal Building.
