Augusta planning director resigns

Carla Delaney

Date: April 30, 2025

Augusta is losing another department director with the resignation Friday of Planning and Development Director Carla Delaney.

Several Augusta commissioners confirmed her resignation, which is effective May 30. None offered a reason for the move.

Delaney has served as planning director since 2021. The department facilitates city planning and zoning decisions made by multiple appointed city boards as well as ensures buildings meet construction and maintenance codes.

Delaney joined city government in 2015. Initially employed with Augusta Housing and Community Development, she moved to Planning and Development in 2019 after the resignation of former Director Melanie Wilson. She served under former Planning Director Rob Sherman, who returned after Wilson left, then became interim director and later director after Sherman retired in 2021.

Delaney frequently addresses the commission on various planning, development and codes enforcement matters, but the department has come under fire from some commissioners for its role in codes enforcement, which some commissioners have pushed to transfer to the Richmond County Marshal’s Office, as well as in new construction.

Her resignation will mark the fifth by a city department head in just over a year. Last year, the directors of Recreation, Finance, Procurement and Central Services each were shown the door but left with payouts under the city’s generous severance policy.

Hired under a 2011 city personnel policy, Delaney is eligible for severance pay and benefits equal to one month per year of service.
