Augusta-Richmond County Committee for Good Government votes on candidates

The Augusta-Richmond County Committee for Good Government made its endorsements Tuesday for candidates in the May 21 election and general primary.

The votes heavily favored those who attended the group’s Tuesday candidate forum and several did not attend. The group only favored one incumbent, Commissioner Catherine Smith McKnight.

The Harrisburg-and National Hills-area group meets at the Julian Smith Casino Barbecue Pit and for decades has endorsed candidates, sometimes choosing winners.

The group’s votes on candidates were:

Augusta Commission District 1 

  • Matt Aitken: 31
  • Jo’Rae Jenkins: 2
  • Jordan Johnson: 10 (incumbent)
  • Kenny Osorio: 0

Augusta Commission District 3

  • Joidaz Gaines: 1
  • Catherine Smith McKnight: 39 (incumbent)
  • Carol J. Yancy: 2

Augusta Commission District 5

  • Don “DC” Clark: 39
  • Bobby Williams: 3 (incumbent)

Augusta Commission District 7

  • Marshall Bedder: 12
  • Tina Slendak: 31

Augusta Commission District 9

  • Francine Scott: 14 (incumbent)
  • Marion Williams: 27

Richmond County Sheriff

  • Eugene “Gino Rock” Brantley: 11
  • Richard Dixon: 3
  • Bo Johnson: 23
  • Richard Roundtree: 5 (incumbent)

Augusta Circuit District Attorney

  • Amber Brantley: 29
  • Jared Williams: 14 (incumbent)

Superior Court Judge

  • Charles H.S. Lyons III: 2
  • Matt Matson: 24
  • Willie Saunders: 17

Gaines, Bobby Williams, Scott, Osorio, Yancy and Lyons did not attend. About 43 of the group’s paying members got to cast the unofficial ballots.

Mayor Garnett Johnson plugged a “yes” vote on the May 21 referendum on giving Augusta’s mayor a vote at the forum, but the group didn’t vote on whether to approve the referendum.
