The City of Augusta has announced that the Augusta Riverwalk will be temporarily closed beginning Wednesday, May 14, to allow for an extensive cleanup operation in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

The closure is expected to last approximately two weeks, with a reopening planned for the week of May 26, weather permitting, according to a press release from Augusta-Richmond County.

Although initial debris removal was conducted soon after the hurricane, large remnants such as tree stumps, limbs and root balls still litter the area. The City noted that removing these hazards will require specialized heavy equipment, prompting the temporary closure for public safety.

“We understand the Riverwalk is a beloved destination for residents and visitors alike,” said County Administrator Tameka Allen. “However, the safety of our community is our top priority. The scale and nature of this cleanup demand full access to the area without the risk of public interference or injury.”

While the Riverwalk will be inaccessible, the Saturday Market will remain open and continue operating during its regular hours.

City officials are asking for the public’s patience and cooperation during the cleanup process. Updates will be provided via the City of Augusta’s official website and social media channels.
