Three men charged with robbing the Broad Street Family Dollar were looking for businesses to hit but skipped others because they were too busy, authorities said.

Robbers Travis Hamilton and Zachariah Jenkins and getaway driver Willie Ivey have all been arrested in Saturday night’s robbery of the Family Dollar on Broad Street. Hamilton and Jenkins allegedly entered the business at 8:48 p.m. Saturday and stole an unknown amount of cash from the register, sheriff’s Chief of Staff Lewis Blanchard said in a press release.

“(The suspects) had been driving through Augusta throughout the night looking for businesses to rob,” Chief Blanchard said. “The three stopped at two stores prior to arriving at the Family Dollar on Broad Street but decided not to proceed due to the number of people present.

After fleeing Family Dollar, a good Samaritan in the parking lot tried to stop one of the suspects with a vehicle. One suspect fired a round at the witness before the firearm appeared to malfunction. The suspects then fled on foot behind the business.

Deputies from Road Patrol, the Crime Suppression Team, the Holiday Robbery Special Assignment Team, and a K9 unit responded quickly, established a perimeter, and deployed a tracking K9. One suspect was located a few blocks from the scene. CID officers found the other two later.

All three suspects are charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, weapon possession, and two counts of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Investigators also determined that Hamilton is a suspect in a 2022 armed robbery at the same Family Dollar location. Based on this new information, additional charges related to that incident will be forthcoming, Chief Blanchard said.

In 2024, armed robberies of businesses were at 26 at this same point. This year, they are at 17, which represents a 35 percent decrease.
