The Greater Augusta community is gearing up for the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk, an event that honors first responders and military service members while raising funds to support their families.

Participants of all ages are invited  to come out for the festivities on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Douglas Barnard Amphitheater on Augusta University’s Summerville Campus.

The first race of the day will commence at 8:46 a.m, which marks the moment when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Tunnel to Towers is a national foundation established in honor of firefighter Stephen Siller, who lost his life while saving others during the Sept. 11th attacks.

The foundation aims to support Gold Star and fallen first responder families with young children by providing them mortgage-free homes. Tunnel to Towers also builds specially-adapted smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.

The Greater Augusta Tunnel to Towers 5K Run is just one of many held across the nation, from New York City to Florida, to raise awareness and support for the foundation’s mission.

Children, teens and adults are invited to attend, with the adult registration fee being the highest at $40. Registration is open for the event until day-of. However, registration prices are set to go up after Sept. 6.

Prospective participants can sign up on the organization’s Augusta page. Donations and volunteer signups are also accepted there.
