Augusta shooting death marks third homicide in five days

The latest homicide victim was found Monday morning by a motorist who saw a body outside Perry's Pig restaurant on Old Savannah Road.

Richmond County recorded its third homicide in the last five days with a shooting death early Monday on Old Savannah Road.

A passing motorist saw the latest shooting victim around 7:20 a.m. Monday, April 18 on the 1900 block of Old Savannah Road in front of Perry’s Pig restaurant and notified the sheriff’s office. The victim was shot at least one time and pronounced dead on the scene at 7:58 a.m., Coroner Mark Bowen said. He was identified as Johnnie Coleman, 72, of the 200 block of Holloway Drive in Augusta.

The homicide follows two others that have occurred in Richmond County over the last five days:

• JaJuan Russell, 21, of East Chapman Street, was fatally shot on Easter morning on the 3700 block of Oslo Road.  He was taken to Augusta University Medical Center by EMS where he was pronounced dead at 1:14 a.m. Sunday, April 17, Bowen said.

• Brandon Peebles, 24, was shot Thursday morning, April 14, on the 2300 Block of Prague Court, in the Barton Village community of Augusta.  The victim was rushed to Augusta University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m. the coroner said. Authorities say the victim had been shot in the upper torso.

No arrest or suspect was announced in any of the three latest homicides. Richmond County has recorded 10 homicides so far this year.
