Richmond County authorities say a suspect was hit by a car while running from cops Tuesday night and then accidentally shot himself in the leg.

The suspect, who was identified as 35-year-old Tommy Browner Jr., was allegedly laying drag somewhere near Deans Bridge Road at Augusta Tech Drive. Witnesses say he was doing donuts in the parking lot of the Circle K. When police arrived, the man took off and was then blocked in by cops.

“The subject fled from the vehicle on foot and was struck by a passing vehicle,” sheriff’s Sgt. Caleb Lee said in a press release. “The subject continued to flee when Deputies made contact with the subject on the 3100 Block of Deans Bridge Road, at which time, Deputies deployed their tasers but the subject continued to flee on foot into a wooded area. The subject appears to have attempted to retrieve a firearm but the gun went off causing the subject to sustain a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the right leg.”

The man was transported to the hospital for treatment, and witness images show the man being loaded into an ambulance. Browner will face multiple felony charges once he has been released from the hospital, authorities said.
