The Augusta Symphony celebrates their 70th anniversary on May 23.
It was founded in 1954 by director Harry M. Jacobs and was originally comprised of a small group of musicians. Now, the symphony is an 85-member professional ensemble and leading regional orchestra.
Jacobs conducted the symphony until 1991, and there have been three conductors leading the symphony since his departure: Donald Portnoy (1991-2009), Shizuo Z. Kuwahara (2009-2016), and Dirk Meyer (2016-current).
The Augusta Symphony has grown and expanded significantly since its founding, which has allowed them to engage with audiences of all ages and levels of music knowledge. The symphony attributes this growth to the support of the Augusta Symphony Guild, the Augusta Symphony League, and the Friends of the Augusta Symphony.
Season subscriptions for the Augusta Symphony’s 70th season are now available. Single show tickets will go on sale on August 6. Subscriptions and tickets can be found at www.AugustaSymphony.com and at the Miller Theater Box Office.
