On Tuesday, March 18, the City of Augusta announced it has nearly completed the clean up of residential right-of-way-debris.

The final phase began on Jan. 21 in the western and northern parts of the county and good progress has been made, according to a press release from the City.

“At this time, most of Districts 1, 2, 3, and 7 have been certified as complete,” the press release stated. “Significant progress has also been made in Districts 4, 5, 6, and 8, which are expected to be substantially complete during the week of March 17. Residents are reminded not to place any new debris out for collection, particularly in areas that have already been certified as complete, as there is no guarantee that it will be picked up.”

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) finished debris pick-up along state highway right-of-ways on Feb. 28. According to the city, GDOT is not going to be picking up items on state routes going forward, so residents are asked to not place any debris on those right-of-ways.

“We understand that many residents are beginning their seasonal “spring cleaning,” which may include trimming bushes or removing vegetation,” the city press release stated. “However, this type of yard waste is not considered storm debris and should be handled through regular garbage collection by bagging it appropriately. Adding fresh yard waste to existing storm debris piles may result in the entire pile being deemed ineligible for collection, making removal the responsibility of the property owner.”

The city is also working to prevent and address illegal dumping. To help address this issue, it is recommended that residents request proof of disposal before making the final payment ton contractors.

If anyone believes their property was missed during the final pass, they need to call 311 to make a report. Each request will be reviewed using available proof, which includes aerial data.
