The City of Augusta and Mayor Garnett L. Johnson will host a one-year commemoration of Hurricane Helene, the devastating Category 4 storm that struck the region on Sept. 27, 2024.
The remembrance event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. at Heroes’ Overlook on the Augusta Riverwalk, according to a press release from the Office of Mayor Garnett L. Johnson.
City officials, emergency partners and community leaders will gather to honor lives lost, recognize first responders, and provide updates on ongoing recovery efforts.
The program will include a moment of silence, recognition of volunteers and Emergency Operations Center partners, a review of recovery statistics such as debris removal and remarks from the Long-Term Recovery Group.
“On this solemn anniversary, we not only grieve what was lost, we also acknowledge how far we’ve come,” said Mayor Johnson. “The strength and spirit of Augusta have never been more evident than in the year that followed Hurricane Helene.”
Joining Mayor Johnson at the commemoration will be members of the Augusta Commission, Administrator Tameka Allen, Fire Chief Antonio Burden and other local leaders, according to a press release from the Office of Mayor Garnett L. Johnson.
