Augusta University announced Melissa Brocato as the interim athletic director on Monday, June 13.

Brocato, who is from King, N.C., will fill the spot vacated by Clint Bryant when he retires on June 30. She begins her role as interim AD on July 1. While Brocato is thankful for the opportunity, she said Bryant will surely be missed.

“He has been my boss for 24 years and someone I really appreciate and has always treated me so kindly. Seeing him leave is the sad part, but I am excited for the opportunity and thankful that Dr. Keel has confidence to help lead in this transition time,” Brocato said.

Brocato currently serves as the assistant athletic director for Internal Affairs and the head coach of AU’s softball team. She has been with the university for over 20 years and has been the softball coach since 1998.

She has led the Jaguars to 561 wins in 24 seasons and six NCAA tournament appearances and will be entering her 25th season in 2022-23 as softball head coach as the Interim AD plans to continue coaching throughout her role.

When asked how to replace Bryant, Brocato said she cannot possibly replace Bryant, even when she steps into his shoes.

“You can’t replace, you can’t fill in. He is in a class all of is own with his experience. His years and contribution,” said Brocato. “Nobody is going to try to replace Clint Bryant because they can’t.”

While Brocato says she could see a more administrative role in the future, she is currently only an interim AD, and the university will continue to a national search in replacement of Bryant.
