The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents officially announced Friday morning that Augusta University’s current executive vice president and chief of staff would begin serving as the institute’s next president starting this summer.

Effective July 1, Russell T. Keen, who has worked alongside AU’s president since 2015, will take over university responsibilities as Keel steps into retirement.

“I’m looking forward to watching Dr. Keen push AU toward being one of the best research universities in the nation as it continues to emphasize student success,” USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue said.

Previously holding leadership roles at Georgia Southern University and in fundraising at the University of Georgia, Russell has worked within the university system for more than 22 years.

“Russell has the experience and institutional knowledge for the job, and that will be critical as we look to increase Augusta University’s impact in Georgia and beyond,” Perdue said.

Keen’s appointment follows Keel’s announcement that he would retire following the end of the 2023-24 academic year, ending a 40-year career in higher education to enjoy traveling.

“I truly look forward to serving Augusta University as its next president,” Keen said. “I am excited to expand the focus Augusta University has had on cutting-edge research and innovation.”
