Janitorial company fired after theft of Augusta University student’s property

Date: August 01, 2024

A janitor working at Augusta University has been fired for several thefts from student dormitories, according to a campus police report.

On July 17, an AU officer responded to a theft report at Elm Hall, a student dormitory, where a student reported her blue bathroom mat missing from the laundry room. A resident assistant reviewed surveillance footage and identified the suspect as a janitor employed by the third-party service JanPro cleaning services.

The footage showed the janitor taking the mat, placing it in a trash bag and disposing of it. Despite a prior theft report involving the same worker, the suspect continued to work at Elm Hall. Following this incident, Director of Housing Services Ariel Leary requested the thief’s removal and issued a criminal trespass warning.

On July 18, the worker was terminated from her position, and her identification was collected. The director confirmed that no further action, such as a trespass warning, was needed as the worker was no longer employed at the university.

The theft came as the housing staff of Elm Hall was reporting reoccurring issues with students clothing and items being removed without permission.
