Augusta University Police arrest hit and run/DUI driver

Date: September 01, 2023

A hit and run driver was nabbed by Augusta University Police for fleeing and crashing into a concrete pillar at the university’s 15th Street parking garage.

The incident, which occurred Aug. 19, according to the police report, happened in front of the Augusta University Police headquarters on 15th Street near Walton Way. Officer Matthew Ridgeway reports that he heard the accident occur and immediately responded.

Upon encountering the scene, Ridgeway saw one of the cars involved, a dark colored Nissan Versa, take off at a high rate of speed. After checking on the other driver, Kaila Boatright, Ridgeway pursued the vehicle.

The driver, identified as 30-year-old Angelica Rouse, turned into the 15th Street garage where the car struck a concrete pillar and came to rest.

After smelling alcohol on Rouse’s breath, Ridgeway called the Richmond County Sheriff’s office and Georgia State Patrol for backup.

Rouse was arrested without incident and charged with DUI, hit and run failure to maintain lane and driving on a suspended license.

No structural damage was done to the parking deck.
