Augusta University student sexually assaulted in her dorm room

Date: December 15, 2022

Editor’s note: A previous version of this article inaccurately reported that Angel Garcia and Cameron Pope have prior arrest histories. Pope does not have a history of arrests. The Augusta Press regrets the error.

Augusta University officers were dispatched to University Village dorms on Wrightsboro Road on Monday, Oct. 3 when an unnamed female student reported being sexually assaulted by three men.

According to the police report, she recognized one of the men, Cameron Pope, 20, from their interactions on Snapchat under his handle “bryzehaze” but not the others who were identified as Tyrean Hatcher, 19, and Angel Garcia, 30. According to the report, the victim allowed Pope to visit her that evening when he arrived at her door with Garcia and Hatcher unbeknownst to her.

The report stated that once the men arrived, Pope told the victim he had a knife, and the men demanded the victim perform sexual acts on them.

The three men then forced the victim into her room where she said she performed sexual acts as instructed by her attackers, calling 911 after they left her home.

Fearful for her safety, as well as that of her roommates, the victim told officers she did not scream for help or bring attention to what was happening.

After questioning, officers escorted the victim to the AU Medical Center to be seen by medical professionals.

AUPD also spoke with the victim’s roommates, but they were not aware of the incident. One was wearing headphones and the other was asleep at the time of the incident.

The suspects have not been arrested at this time, and the university police have not provided The Augusta Press with any updates on this investigation.
