The Augusta Utilities Department is looking to expand its facilities.
The Augusta Planning Commission’s first meeting of 2025 is slated to include a rezoning request by engineer Birkie Ayer at 1858 Wylds Road.
The roughly triangular, undeveloped, five-acre parcel is adjacent to the Utilities Dept. building. The request seeks to rezone the property from One-family Residential (R-1A) to Light Industrial (LI) zoning, so that it may share zoning with the Utilities property at 1840 Wylds Road and use the vacant, wooded land as a storage yard.
The surrounding area has a blend of industrial and residential areas. The subject property is directly northwest of Mayer Electric Supply, which is zoned LI. Across the street from all three properties Georgia Power, west of which is the Champion Pines apartment complex. The Coca Cola Bottling Co. is also a neighbor to the Utilities Dept. and the prospective storage area.
The concept plan submitted with the request doesn’t show any new structures proposed, though does include a new access road that would cut through the middle of the tract from the Utilities office to Wylds Road.
The Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the rezoning in its meeting on Jan. 6, 2025.
