Baby’s possible overdose death leads to murder charge against Athens woman

Date: July 02, 2022

The suspected overdose death of a baby at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia has led to a murder charge against the child’s babysitter.

Athens-Clarke County Police have charged Pamela Graves, 59, with felony murder and possession of schedule II controlled substance following the June 25 death of 15-month-old Zamiya Kelly.

The child tested positive for Fentanyl, opiates and Benzodia at the children’s hospital in Augusta, according to Lt. Shaun Barnett of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. A 911 call was made on June 24 at an Athens home and the baby was first taken to an Athens hospital and later transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia where she died the next day.

Investigators don’t believe the baby was intentionally dosed with any illegal drugs, but they believe she was exposed to the drugs while in Graves’ care, Lt. Barnett wrote by email. The investigation into the case continues.
