A man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon at a Sunoco gas station in Waynesboro, and the suspect later turned himself in, according to statements from the Waynesboro Police Department and the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers were dispatched at approximately 12:03 p.m. to the Sunoco located at 740 E. 7th Street in reference to a reported shooting. When they arrived, officers found the victim, identified as Kennarius Roshawn McBride. He was transported to Burke Health in Waynesboro, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigators reviewed security footage from the store and identified Jalen Floyd Cox as the suspected shooter. Cox turned himself in shortly afterward at the Burke County Detention Center.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office previously reported that an altercation took place inside the store before escalating into gunfire. Investigators from both agencies worked at the scene throughout Thursday, processing evidence and interviewing witnesses.

The Waynesboro Police Department expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, noting that both agencies have been working closely together since the incident occurred.

Although an arrest has been made, the investigation remains active. Anyone with information that may assist the prosecution is asked to contact Investigator Faith Cup at 706-526-5013, the Waynesboro Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 706-554-8022, or the Burke County Sheriff’s Office at 706-554-2133.

Officials say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
