City of Bessemer lends a hand

City of Bessemer Councilman Chester Porter emphasized the significance of the donation drive, stating, “Our city was just tremendously excited to reach out to Augusta to help out. We love partnering with our sister cities and since this one was so close in proximity, we decided to take on this.”

Augusta Fire, mayor on donations

Upon receiving the donations, Augusta Fire Administration expressed gratitude for the generosity of the Bessemer City Council Members and their community.

“We still have people in need, so we’ll keep on moving forward,” said Augusta Fire Deputy Chief Keith Lively. “But we just appreciate all the help that people have given, all the resources that they’ve given us.”

Mayor Garnett Johnson visited the fire station at the time of the donation drop off, saying that the city of Bessemer reached out to Augusta early on after Hurricane Helene to lend a hand.

“We’re gracious to receive some of that help,” he said. “We still have families that are still struggling, some just due to the size and gravity of the storm. But we’re so grateful to partners like the city of Bessemer.”

Donations received on Monday afternoon will be distributed by Augusta Fire to families in need on Dec. 20.
