At times it played out as a defensive struggle, but a couple of big offensive spurts for Westside proved to be the difference in the Patriots’ 21-16 Region 4-AAA win Friday night at Westside.

With Westside clinging to a 14-13 lead it took into halftime, Aquinas kicker Grant Miller booted a 22-yard field goal to give the Fightin’ Irish a 16-14 lead with 2:50 left in the fourth quarter.

Westside answered in a major way when junior quarterback Jaylen Stone connected with Jahvon Williams for 73-yard scoring strike to put Westside back on top. The Patriots’ defense held off Aquinas’ attempts at a last-minute comeback, and moved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in region play.
