Blanchard, court honored for service to veterans

Chief Columbia County Superior Court Judge James G. Blanchard Jr. and the veterans treatment court were honored last month for their service to veterans.

On Nov. 19, 2023, the Military Order of the World Wars, Augusta chapter, honored Blanchard as a “Patriot Member” for his longtime role presiding over veterans court.

Veterans Court Mentor Coordinator Gary L. Smith Sr. and Col. Maryetta M. Beck presented the award on behalf of the MOWW.

Veterans Treatment Court team members recognized last month, from left are Inv. On Nov. 7, the Columbia Circuit Veterans Treatment Court was honored with the Patrick Henry Award for service to the armed forces.

The award, the first bestowed on a Georgia accountability court, is given for exceptional service to the armed forces and national guard, according to a statement.

The Columbia Judicial Circuit Accountability Court was established in July 2022 after Columbia County split from the Augusta Judicial Circuit, which includes Richmond and Burke counties.

The program has three tracks – drug court, mental wellness court and veterans court.

Veterans court currently is providing services to nine veterans and one active service member, the statement said.
