Body found after fire at abandoned business on Walton Way

Richmond County authorities found a burned body inside an abandoned business on Walton Way that caught fire early Thursday.

The fire started around 4:30 a.m. Thursday at 1552 Walton Way. The location of the old Auto Money Title Pawn that is painted in bright yellow and green.

“The fire department found the body in the abandoned building while fighting the fire,” Coroner Mark Bowen said.  

The victim was found inside on the second floor near the top of the stairs. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene at 7:30 a.m.

The body was burned beyond recognition, making it hard to even determine a sex. But the body appeared to be Caucasian, the coroner said. An autopsy is scheduled with the GBI Lab.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
