The owner of two troubled Augusta apartment complexes has obtained more time to prepare for a hearing on losing their business licenses.
Redwood Housing, which owns the Bon Air and Richmond Summit, sought a continuance in the city’s effort to suspend, revoke or place on probation its licenses for allowing conditions at the living complexes to deteriorate.
The hearing, which was scheduled for Tuesday, has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 5, according to a notice released Friday.
City leaders have repeatedly urged Redwood to better manage the properties but grew frustrated when conditions continued to lapse. In 2023, U.S. Rep. Rick Allen called for an investigation by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
After a recent rash of shootings, lack of building security, non-working air conditioning and other problems, the Augusta Commission said “enough is enough” and put Redwood on notice the city is considering action against its licenses.
The complexes, one on Walton Way in Summerville and the other on Broad Street downtown, both are historic former hotels converted into project-based Section 8 housing. Occupancy is supposed to be limited to those over age 62 or the disabled.
With appropriate notice and a public hearing, the city may suspend, revoke or place on probation a business’ license to operate, for reasons that include a failure to adequately supervise the premises.
