Bond denied for man who allegedly shot at deputies during car chase

WILLIAMS, OLAJUWON RAJEEN - 05/08/2022 -

Date: May 28, 2022

An Augusta man repeatedly involved in domestic violence incidents and who allegedly shot at two sheriff deputies during a police pursuit was denied bond Friday, May 27.

Olajuwon R. Williams, 24, was arrested on May 8 at the end of a high-speed pursuit in the late afternoon through south Augusta. Williams fired multiple gunshots at the Richmond County Sheriff officers, Assistant District Attorney William Hammond said Friday during Williams’ Richmond County Superior Court bond hearing.

When the vehicle being chased finally stopped because of blocking traffic, Williams crawled through the passenger side window and ran on foot, Hammond said. The driver, who remained in the vehicle, told officers that when Williams first saw the sheriff officers, he pointed the gun at him and ordered him to flee, Hammond said.

The pursuit started after sheriff deputies responded on May 8 to a second call for help from Williams’ girlfriend. After allegedly leaving messages earlier in the day threatening to shoot her and her family, sheriff officers were sent back to her home when Williams allegedly showed up with a gun.

Williams and his girlfriend argued first on March 21 and after she left the home, he called threatening to shoot up her aunt’s house and kill her, Hammond said. While she was talking with deputies that day about Williams, he called her again and threatened to kill her, which the deputies heard, Hammond said.

Williams was also arrested in January and again on April 28 for family violence battery on the same victim, Hammond said.

Williams was released from prison on Oct. 21. He served 10 years for armed robbery which he committed when he was just 14 years old. He and three other teens robbed a pizza delivery employee at gunpoint on Oct. 21, 2011, in Augusta, according to court documents.

Judge Amanda Heath denied bond Friday. Williams is charged with kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, four counts of terroristic threats, criminal damage to property and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
