Candidate Monique Braswell filed paperwork Monday to begin accepting campaign contributions in her run for District 5 on the Richmond County Board of Education.

The declaration of intent makes Braswell the only candidate qualified to accept contributions. Candidate Christopher Mulliens announced recently on Facebook he’ll run but has filed no paperwork with Richmond County Board of Elections.

The incumbent District 5 trustee, Patsy Scott, filed a 2021 affidavit stating she did not intend to accept contributions exceeding $2,500 or spend more than that amount during the campaign cycle that ends next year.

In other seats coming open on the school board next year, District 1 incumbent Shawnda Griffin filed an affidavit of exemption in 2021. District 4 incumbent Wayne Frazier filed one in June.

For the District 8 seat, incumbent Jimmy Atkins filed an affidavit of exemption in 2022 and District 10 incumbent Helen Minchew filed one in 2017.

So far the District 5 trusteeship is the only school board post coming open to attract challengers. Candidate qualifying isn’t until August and the election in in November 2024.
