Due to weather forecasts calling for rain and thunderstorms Wednesday because of Hurricane Idalia’s anticipated landfall, the Richmond County School System has canceled all after school activities for Wednesday, including all sporting events.
The regular school day will continue as normal, but RCSS superintendent Kenneth Bradshaw said close attention will be given to weather forecasts in order to determine additional schedule changes.
“The Richmond County School System is closely monitoring the weather forecasts and the anticipated impact of Hurricane Idalia on our area,” Bradshaw said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, all schools will be restricting outdoor activities tomorrow and also all after-school activities, including athletics, are cancelled for Wednesday.”
The storm, which is steadily intensifying as it makes its way toward Florida, is expected to make landfall sometime Wednesday morning, according to forecasts from weather.com.
The Augusta/CSRA area will likely be impacted with heavy rains, gusty winds and thunderstorms starting early Wednesday morning through Thursday morning. As of now, no information has been given on any make-up dates for canceled activities and games.
Bradshaw urged parents to stay tuned to the district’s regular channels of communication for further updates and news of any other developments that could impact the school day.
“We will continue to provide updates through Parent Portal, our social media channels and the media,” Bradshaw said.
