The Brier Creek Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) recently announced the winners of its annual Poster and Photo Contest, a key event aimed at educating young people about the importance of conservation.

The contest is part of the Georgia Association of Conservation District’s (GACD) initiative to engage students in environmental stewardship, according to a press release from the SWCD.

This year’s poster contest, open to public, private, and homeschooled students in grades 3 through 5, centered on GACD’s theme “Home is Where the Habitat Is,” emphasizing the crucial role of both natural and managed habitats in conservation efforts.

Zayden Oliver, a fifth grader, took first place in the poster contest, earning a $75 award.

The photo contest, which focused on conservation practices, was open to students in grades 9 through 12 across the Brier Creek SWCD.

The competition saw a remarkable achievement from Sara Morgan Sapp, a 9th grader who claimed all three top spots in the photo category, securing $150 in total prize money, according to a press release from the SWCD.

The winners were honored in a ceremony held at the Natural Resources Conservation Office in Waynesboro, Ga., where Dana Tripp, the GACD’s Northeast Regional Program manager, and Leonard Hill, chairman of the Brier Creek SWCD Board, presented the awards.

The top entries from the poster and photo contests will be submitted to the GACD State Poster and Photo Contest for further recognition.

Both GACD and the Brier Creek SWCD continue to encourage young Georgians to embrace conservation practices that benefit local communities and help protect the state’s natural resources, according to a press release from the SWCD.

The Brier Creek SWCD, serving Richmond, Glascock, Jefferson, Burke and Jenkins Counties, works alongside farmers, landowners, homeowners, and government entities to promote sustainable resource management.
