Construction along Broad Street is set to ramp up as a new phase of construction begins Monday.

Crews will start construction in the median between James Brown Boulevard and 13th street, affecting traffic and parking in the area, according to the latest release from Paquin PR.

The construction will take place in the median between Ninth Street, known as James Brown Boulevard, and 13th Street. Traffic will be narrowed to a single 11-foot lane in each direction.

On-street parking in this section will be partially removed, and spaces in the recessed median will no longer be accessible. Drivers will be directed to park in a deck on James Brown Boulevard.

Despite the changes, sidewalks will remain open through this phase of construction, which spans about half a mile.

Work is already underway at both ends of the section, including on what’s being called the James Brown Linear Park, located between James Brown Boulevard and Eighth Street.

Former park space and recessed parking already have been removed and contractors are installing underground utilities, electrical conduits and irrigation lines for the new park.

Between 13th Street and St. Sebastian Way, crews continue to demolish asphalt and concrete and install underground utilities. One lane of traffic is expected to reopen next month.

Between St. Sebastian Way and 15th Street, sidewalk upgrades remain in progress.

The multimillion-dollar downtown streetscape project has been funded through the Transportation Investment Act, the 1% sales tax voters approved for transportation projects.

In addition to the Broad Street project, which runs from Milledge Road to East Boundary, the massive downtown effort includes work on Fifth, Sixth, 13th, Greene and Telfair streets.

Work on Fifth and Sixth streets has been deemed complete.

In response to concerns raised by downtown business owners about losing parking and business as a result of the projects, the city recently expanded the project budget by $315,000, hiring Paquin to manage public relations.
