Burke County arrests two on drug charges

KEYSVILLE – Two Burke County men were arrested on several counts Tuesday.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, members of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team arrested Michael William Whitaker and James Gordon Martin at 1200 block of Farmers Bridge Road for illegal narcotic sales.

According to deputies, upon entry Whitaker was caught holding a “small caliber semi-automatic handgun” and was taken into custody after a minor altercation.

Martin was located in the residence’s kitchen “disposing of narcotics” and was also taken into custody after a brief struggle, an email from Capt. Jimmy Wylds of the Burke County Sheriff’s Office said.

Items seized during the search warrant included methamphetamines, materials to package methamphetamines for sale and several firearms, the email said.

Martin was found to have an active warrant for failing to register as a sex offender and was charged with possession of methamphetamine, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer and failure to register as a sex offender.

Whitaker was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
