Burke County detention officer arrested for allegedly smuggling tobacco into jail

Date: April 01, 2022

A Burke County Sheriff’s detention officer has been arrested for allegedly smuggling contraband to jail inmates, according to a statement released by Sheriff Alfonzo Williams on March 31.

Following an investigation that began in February, Timothy Kirkland, 39, of Waynesboro was charged with bringing contraband across the guard line and violation of oath of office. The investigation started after the department received a tip contraband was making its way into the jail.

Kirkland was a five-year veteran at the detention center. He was fired after his arrest.

The contraband consisted of tobacco and tobacco products. There is no indication at this time that any other contraband was introduced into the facility, according to the sheriff’s news release. The investigation continues and more charges may be brought as warranted.
