The innocent bystander shot at the Augusta Mall during the homicide of Derell Little said Oct. 3, 2020, was her first day working at a mall jewelry kiosk.
Aubrey Adams said she now serves in the Air Force and lives out of state. Adams was one of several witnesses who testified Wednesday in the murder trial of Tony Rodrequez Burton.
Burton, 40, is accused of gunning down Little after an altercation involving four men near the kiosk on the mall’s lower level. Burton reportedly grabbed Little’s gun and used it to shoot him.
A bullet from the gun allegedly went through the kiosk and struck Adams in the kneecap. Knocked to the ground, she looked up and saw Little staggering forward, his face covered in blood.
“He was basically bleeding out and asking for help,” Adams said.
She’s struggled with anxiety since the incident, especially during military training that involves weapons.
“It makes it difficult to go anywhere, because it could happen anywhere,” Adams said.
Witness David Erstin testified he noticed some sort of fight nearby and overheard Burton say he “wasn’t playing.” Burton chased Little through a clothing store and shot him three times, he said.
