After 59 years, George P. Butler High School is celebrating a class AA State Basketball Championship win.
A school-wide pep rally rang in the boys basketball team’s victory, one which was claimed on March 6 with a 57-49 triumph against Union County.

A historic net cutting
The boys received championship medals at the rally, and also took turns cutting clipping from the basketball net, a longstanding sports tradition that hasn’t been observed in the Butler High gym since the Bulldogs’ last championship victory nearly six decades ago.

“The wear and tear that the nets go through throughout the season, it’s kind of funny man, it kind of mirrors my team, you know what I’m saying? Some good games, some bad games, some thunks, some bruises, some dirt and um, you know, I think the net cutting ceremony was um something beautiful…I’m just glad those guys were able to experience it,” said Coach Chaz Clark in a profound statement.

Coach, player share their thoughts
Amidst the festivities, Clark was also recognized for being named the Region AA Coach of the Year.
Clark spoke during the event about the potential he sees in the team members both on and off the court.
“[The championship win] won’t be the best thing they ever accomplish in their life, and I just hope they take this journey as evidence of what they can accomplish, if they’re willing to put the work in,” he said.

Senior student and basketball player Marcus Scurry said that Coach Clark sets a great example for him and his teammates: “He’s an excellent role model. He does everything right…I really love him,” he said.
As for the big win, Scurry said he looks forward to being remembered for achieving excellence.
“It feels great, cause, we’re now a part of history,” he said.
