Butler High fights lead to multiple arrests & suspensions

Date: August 16, 2023

Several students have been arrested for fights that disrupted classes Tuesday at Butler High School in Augusta, according to Richmond County authorities.

School district spokeswoman Keisa Gunby called it a “large fight” that led to multiple arrests and suspensions.

“The incident is being taken seriously,” Gunby said. “We are continuing to investigate the fight and any activity around the fight. We are continuing to provide additional security and taking all precautions to keep our students safe and maintain order in the school.”

Those charged with disrupting school are Nicole Lee, Le’Neidra Williams, Malik Brooks and Nehemiah Wallas. Brooks and Wallas were also charged with simple battery. The victim is listed as a juvenile male. Other charges could follow on other students as the investigation continues by school police.

A photo posted Tuesday on Facebook shows two students on top of a classmate as a crowd watches. The caption reads, “Check on y’all kids. They wilding out at Butler High School.”

Videos show fighting in both the hallway and in a classroom, with students even pushing back against school officials as they try to break them up.

Principal Bernard Chatman told parents in a letter that a group of students engaged in a fight during the transition from breakfast to class.

“Administrators and School Safety and Security responded immediately and the students involved were sent home,” Dr. Chatman said. “The incident is being addressed following the Code of Student Conduct and Discipline.”
