Donald Prescott, 63, of Augusta, is charged with theft by taking - felony

Date: February 25, 2022

An employee at Cabela’s has confessed to stealing ammunition and other items from the sporting goods store in Augusta, according to a sheriff’s report.

Donald Prescott, 63, of Augusta, was charged Feb. 16 with felony theft by taking.

A supervisor told authorities that Prescott confessed to stealing – and selling – over $2,000 worth of ammunition over several months, including 35 boxes of 9mm rounds and nearly 50 boxes of other assorted ammunition.

But that wasn’t all, according to the report.

Prescott also took “four bottles of Coke, one pack of jerky bites and seven jerky sticks,” the report says. The suspect had already sold the ammunition and couldn’t say the make of the ammunition that he took.

The arrest came after a supervisor discovered video footage of the suspect selecting property and placing it in a bag and exiting the business without paying. Prescott admitted to stealing from Sept. 1 to Feb. 1 when confronted about the theft.
