  • Hopelands Gardens and Rye Patch History Park will be held from 11 a.m. to noon at Hopelands Gardens. Join Allen Riddick, Aiken’s own local historian, for a walk back in time to Aiken in the age of the Winter Colony.   • Columbia County Fire Rescue will hold a hiring fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at  Fire Headquarters, 3910 Desoto Drive, Martinez, Ga. If you are interested in learning more about a career with Fire Rescue, this is an opportunity to meet team members and ask questions about training, job duties, and career advancement. Family is invited to join interested parties as they are able to tour the station and see the different apparatuses used when responding to calls. Attendees can also look inside the fire trucks.

Thursday, Jan. 11

  • Columbia County Fire Rescue will hold a hiring fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at  Fire Headquarters, 3910 Desoto Drive, Martinez, Ga. If you are interested in learning more about a career with Fire Rescue, this is an opportunity to meet team members and ask questions about training, job duties, and career advancement. Family is invited to join interested parties as they are able to tour the station and see the different apparatuses used when responding to calls. Attendees can also look inside the fire trucks. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office will also have a booth set up to talk about career opportunities in the sheriff’s office.
  • The 14th Annual Jimmie Dyess Symposium will be held at 5 p.m. at the Augusta History Museum. The symposium was created and developed to recognize Marine Lieutenant Colonel Jimmie. The symposium will include talks by several distinguished individuals, including the yearly recipients of the Jimmie Dyess Distinguished American Award. Major General Perry Smith, who served thirty years in the United States Air Force flying missions over North Vietnam and Laos, will provide introductory remarks. Honorees for 2024 are local community leaders, Clint Bryant & Nancy Hussey. Medal of Honor recipient James McCloughan will be recognized for his actions as a medic during the Vietnam War.

Friday, Jan. 12

  • Augusta Technical College, Augusta University, and Paine College will hold the 2024 Tri-College program honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  at noon in the 12th in the Jack B. Patrick Information Technology Center on the Augusta Technical College Augusta Campus. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Otis S. Johnson, Chair of the Racial Equity and Leadership (REAL) Task Force appointed in 2020 by Savannah, Georgia Mayor Van R.   • The Richmond County Board of Education will have its committee and regular board meeting. The committee meeting will start at 4 p.m. and the regular board will immediately follow the committee meeting.
