An estimated crowd of 750 braved the morning showers on April 16 to attend the annual Canal Discovery Day, which was held at the Augusta Canal interpretive center.
Visitors were treated to free admission to the interpretive center and enjoyed $5 Petersburg boat rides. Food truck vendors were on hand serving up bar-b-que and other goodies, and the International Gamefish Association held a fishing clinic.

“Some of the people who took part actually caught some fish!” said Margaret Harrison of the Augusta Canal Interpretive Center.
Raes Creek Revival and Caleb Aiken provided musical entertainment, and featured speakers included former Augusta Mayor Bob Young and celebrated local writer Stan Byrdy.
The event also kicked off the scavenger hunt on the Augusta Canal trails, which will continue until April 16.
“It was a great event, there were lots of people who came out despite the rain and they all just wanted to have fun,” Harrison said.
